In the middle of the 18th century the shortest way from the Top city to Podil was called Andriivskyy incline. According to a legend this name appeared due to Saint Andriy Pervozvanyy who put a cross on the mount top and in such a way saved the city from the furious waters of the Dnipro River. Now this is the place Andriivska church is situated. That’s the reason Andriivska church has no bells, which, according to the legend, are able to awaken the waters of the Dnipro and to flood Kyiv.

Basic building work was being executed at the end of the 19th c. (the 90ies) and at the beginning of the 20th c. Nowadays, Andriivskyy incline rebuilt in ancient style is the place of the great out-of-door fair where interesting paintings and different examples of folk craftsmanship are exhibited.

Every day in any weather you can see here many artists who exhibit their paintings, different applied arts items such as decorations, glass and porcelain tableware, funny little wooden sculptures, toys, medals, ancient coins and many other different things. When walking down the incline it seems you are getting back into the 19th or early years of the 20th century. And this not by chance since Bulgakov museum is located here. Mikhail Bulgakov is a famous Russian writer, and his novels (for example “The Master and Margarite”, “Life of the Turbinys”) are known all over the world. 

In Andriivskyy incline one can also find a unique “Museum of one street”, where different things (pictures, photos, etc.) related to history of Andriivskyy incline are collected. Along the whole street a lot of art galleries and artistic salons are located.

 Traditionally many concerts, festivals, art exhibitions take place here. Kyiv dwellers like to visit Andriivskyy incline just to have a rest.
